EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph from the 1968 SBAC Farnborough Air Show, two iconic British aircraft take center stage: the BAC 167 Strikemaster G-AWOS (msn 106) and the BAC Lightning F.53 G-AWON. The Strikemaster, with its distinctive red, white, and blue livery, was a popular advanced trainer and light attack aircraft, while the Lightning, represented here by the F.53 variant, was a renowned supersonic interceptor and strike aircraft. G-AWOS, the Strikemaster in the foreground, was delivered to the Royal Saudi Air Force (RSAF) shortly after the show as 906. Its sister aircraft, G-AWON, was also bound for the RSAF, but as 53-686. The "53" in the registration number denoted the specific variant of the Lightning being delivered, distinguishing it from the earlier F.2s that had been delivered to the RSAF as 52-series aircraft. Behind G-AWOS, the sleek and powerful Lightning F.53 awaits its turn to take to the skies. Both aircraft were significant acquisitions for the RSAF, symbolizing the strong relationship between the UK and Saudi Arabia in the realm of military aviation. The 1968 Farnborough Air Show provided a fitting backdrop for these impressive machines to be showcased before their new home. This photograph offers a glimpse into the rich history of aviation, capturing the essence of a bygone era in flight. The BAC 167 Strikemaster and BAC Lightning stand as testament to the ingenuity and innovation that characterized the aeronautical industry during this time.
