Albatros L. 72c Albis D-1140

Albatros L.72c Albis D-1140 (msn 10108) of the Hamburger Fremdenblatt newspaper. The L.72 was most likely studied as a bomber during the early secret German rearmament programs, Albatros at Berlin-Johannisthal presented this traditional biplane as a transport. The prestigious press group Ullstein AG of Berlin ordered two aircraft for fast delivery of newspapers. Designated L-72b, they were delivered on 8 April 1926, (c-n 10074 D-888, c-n 10075 D-890).The newspapers, being packed in bundles, piled up in vertical racks assembled in the fuselage. A mechanical system made it possible to the pilots to select a rack, then to open a trap door at the base of the fuselage, the newspapers being then released at low altitude. For the Hamburger Fremdenblatt, a leading newspaper, a third aircraft was produced in 1927, designated L-72c and registered as D-1140. By 1934 all three L-72s had been acquired by Hamburger Luftverkehrs G.m.b.H, delivering newspapers to islands in the North Sea, and re-registered D-OBEP, D-OBIZ and D-OMUZ respectively. In 1937 they were sold to Lufthansa (DLH), fitted out as four-passenger transports. Date: circa 1927

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the Albatros L.72c Albis D-1140 (msn 10108), a biplane aircraft produced by Albatros Flugzeugwerke in the late 1920s. The L.72 was initially studied as a potential bomber during the early secret German rearmament programs, but this particular aircraft was presented by Albatros to the prestigious Hamburg-based newspaper, Hamburger Fremdenblatt. In 1926, the newspaper ordered two L-72b models for the fast delivery of their newspapers, which were delivered on April 8, registered as D-888 and D-890. The innovative design of the L-72 included vertical racks in the fuselage to hold bundles of newspapers. A mechanical system allowed the pilots to select a rack, open a trap door at the base of the fuselage, and release the newspapers at low altitude for distribution. In 1927, Hamburger Fremdenblatt ordered a third L-72c model, registered as D-1140. By 1934, all three L-72s had been acquired by Hamburger Luftverkehrs G.m.b.H and were used to deliver newspapers to islands in the North Sea. They were later re-registered as D-OBEP, D-OBIZ, and D-OMUZ, respectively. This photograph, taken circa 1927, captures the sleek lines and innovative design of the Albatros L.72c Albis D-1140, a significant aircraft in the history of aviation and journalism.
