Aichi AB-3
Aichi AB-3 reconnaissance seaplane, ordered by the Imperial Japanese Navy, for use on the Chinese Navys new warship ordered from the Harima shipyard in Japan. Powered by a 130hp Gasuden radial engine, the airframe, when dismantled, was to fit into an area 3.20m (10ft 6in) by 3.3m (10ft l0in) wide. Drawing from experience in designing the closely related AB-2, Aichis aircraft designer Tetsuo Miki completed the prototype in January 1932. Test flights were made by Aichis test pilots, Kanekichi Yokoyama and Tamizo Amagai, from the port of Nagoya, beginning in February of that year. This became the first aeroplane originally designed by Aichi to show great promise from the very first flight, with all performance figures exceeding the specified requirements. The Chinese accepted this one prototype, but the aeroplane was never put into production. Instead, rhe Chinese Naval Arsenal built the Ning Hai shipboard single-seat reconnaissance seaplane designed by Lieut T.T. Mar of the Chinese Navy. Date: 1932

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this vintage photograph, an Aichi AB-3 reconnaissance seaplane, designed by the Japanese aircraft manufacturer Aichi, is seen ready for deployment on a new warship ordered by the Chinese Navy from the Harima shipyard in Japan. Powered by a 130hp Gasuden radial engine, the AB-3 was designed with a compact airframe that could be dismantled to fit into an area of only 3.20m by 3.3m (10ft 6in by 10ft 10in). Building on the success of the closely related AB-2 model, Aichi's lead aircraft designer, Tetsuo Miki, completed the prototype of the AB-3 in January 1932. The first test flights of the AB-3 were conducted by Aichi's test pilots, Kanekichi Yokoyama and Tamizo Amagai, from the port of Nagoya, beginning in February 1932. The AB-3 showed great promise from the very first flight, with all performance figures exceeding the specified requirements. However, despite the Chinese Navy's acceptance of the prototype, the aircraft was never put into production. Instead, the Chinese Naval Arsenal built the Ning Hai, a single-seat reconnaissance seaplane designed by Lieutenant T.T. Mar of the Chinese Navy. This photograph captures a significant moment in the history of Japanese and Chinese aviation, showcasing the innovative design and engineering capabilities of Aichi and the evolving military strategies of the Chinese Navy. The AB-3 may not have entered production, but it remains an important chapter in the annals of aviation history.
