EDITORS COMMENTS
The Pergamon Altar, a grandiose masterpiece of Hellenistic art, stands as a testament to the cultural brilliance of ancient Pergamon in Asia Minor during the 2nd century BC. Commissioned by Eumenes II Soter, this monumental altar was built to honor the gods and showcase the artistic prowess of the Pergamon school. The North Frieze of the Pergamon Altar, now housed in the Pergamon Museum in Berlin, Germany, depicts an intriguing scene of the mythological twins Castor and Pollux engaged in a fierce struggle with a Giant. Castor, the mortal brother, is being seized from behind by the Giant, who bites him viciously in the arm. In response, Pollux, the immortal twin, rushes to his brother's aid, determined to protect him from the relentless attack. This detail from the North Frieze is a prime example of the intricate and dynamic storytelling found in ancient Greek mythology. The high relief sculpture, expertly carved from marble and limestone, showcases the artists' mastery of form, proportion, and emotion. The scene is reminiscent of the epic battle between the gods and the Giants, or Gigantomachy, a popular theme in Hellenistic art. The Pergamon Altar, with its intricate friezes and grand architecture, is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of ancient Greece and the Hellenistic period. Its preservation and display in the Pergamon Museum in Berlin allows modern audiences to appreciate the beauty and complexity of this ancient masterpiece.
