Pere Scie

EDITORS COMMENTS
This satirical print, titled "Pere-scie" or "Father-Saw," dates back to 1832 and depicts a dramatic scene between two prominent French figures of the time: Jean-Charles Persil and Charles Philipon. Persil, dressed in ministerial robes, is shown attempting to decapitate Philipon with a long, saw-toothed nose. Philipon, lying on a stack of "La Caricatura" volumes with his hands bound, appears defenseless. In impression 1a, the saw-toothed nose of Persil drips blood, adding a gruesome touch to the image. The bound volumes beneath Philipon's arms bear a portrait of King Louis Philippe and a pear-shaped caricature. The red coloring of the blood on Persil's nose and the unredacted portrait of Louis Philippe suggest that this impression carries a more explicit political message. In impression 1b, the portrait of Louis Philippe has been redacted, and the red coloring of the blood on Persil's nose is absent. This version of the print may have been produced to tone down the political message or for wider circulation. Both impressions of "Pere-scie" are testament to the satirical and political climate of France during the July Monarchy. The image of Persil, a government censor, using his nose as a weapon to silence Philipon, a prominent caricaturist, reflects the ongoing power struggle between the monarchy and the press. The redacted portrait and absence of blood in impression 1b highlight the need for self-censorship in the face of political repression.
