EDITORS COMMENTS
Plate 6: Perdicula erythrorhyncha, or Painted Bush Quail, is depicted in this exquisite watercolor illustration by Margaret Bushby Lascelles Cockburn from her comprehensive work "Neilgherry Birds and Miscellaneous," published in 1858. The Painted Bush Quail is a native of Southern India and Ceylon, and is a member of the Galliformes order, which includes fowl and other ground-dwelling birds. The male Painted Bush Quail is characterized by its long, grey-brown body, mottled with brown and white spots. The most striking feature of this bird is its distinctive, long, red-orange bill, which contrasts sharply with its dark eyes and grey-brown face. The female, not shown in this illustration, is similar in size and shape but has a brown bill and a less colorful plumage. The Painted Bush Quail is a ground-dwelling bird that prefers dense, bushy habitats. It is omnivorous, feeding on seeds, fruits, and small invertebrates. This illustration captures the bird's anatomical details with remarkable accuracy, showcasing the intricacies of its feathers and the subtle textures of its skin. Margaret Bushby Lascelles Cockburn was a prolific and talented natural history illustrator, whose work was widely admired during the 19th century. Born in Scotland in 1829, she studied under the renowned naturalist John Gould. Her illustrations were published in numerous works, including those by her husband, Dr. William Cockburn, who was a surgeon and naturalist. Cockburn's work on the Painted Bush Quail and other Indian birds remains an important contribution to the field of ornithology and natural history.
