EDITORS COMMENTS
This illustration, created by the renowned naturalist Francis Willughby in the 17th century, showcases an enchanting assembly of three distinctive bird species: Peacocks, Turkeys, and a Dodo. Willughby, born in 1635, was a pioneering figure in the field of zoology, and his meticulous observations and illustrations significantly contributed to the scientific understanding of various animal species during his time. The Peacock, represented in all its regal splendor, is the national bird of India and is renowned for its iridescent blue-green and gold plumage, which is particularly prominent during mating season. The Peacock belongs to the Phasianidae family, order Galliformes, and is scientifically known as Pavo cristatus. The Turkey, depicted next to the Peacock, is a domesticated bird native to North America. This galliform bird, scientifically known as Meleagris gallopavo, was initially domesticated by indigenous peoples in Mexico around 1000 BC. Turkeys are known for their distinctive red, white, and blue waddles, and their meat is a popular food source worldwide. The third bird in this tableau is the extinct Dodo (Raphus cucullatus), a flightless bird that was endemic to the island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. The Dodo, which belonged to the Columbidae family and the order Columbiformes, was characterized by its stocky build, large size, and distinctive helmet-shaped head. The Dodo became extinct around the late 17th century due to human activities, such as hunting and habitat destruction. Willughby's illustration, created around 1672, offers a fascinating glimpse into the natural world of the 17th century, showcasing the beauty and diversity of these iconic birds. The intricate details and lifelike depictions in this illustration continue to captivate and inspire viewers, making it a valuable addition to the annals of natural history.
