EDITORS COMMENTS
"In this whimsical illustration by the renowned British comic artist William Heath Robinson, a party of benevolent philanthropists is seen rewarding the patience of a group of unfortunate fishermen. The scene takes place in a picturesque rural setting, with the fishermen sitting and sleeping among the bushes, their rods and lines attached to hidden hooks, as they wait for their catch. The philanthropists, dressed in their finest attire, approach the fishermen with baskets filled with fresh sardines, salmon, herring, and anchovies, having presumably tinned the excess for the fishermen to take home. The expression of surprise and delight on the faces of the fishermen speaks volumes about the kindness and generosity of their benefactors. This humorous and fanciful scene, which is reminiscent of the pastime of angling, not only highlights the importance of patience in fishing but also the simple joy of sharing and giving. The illustration, dated 1947, is a testament to the historical significance of fishing as a rural pastime and the enduring power of philanthropy to bring people together." Courtesy of Mrs J. C.
