The illustration is part of Sir William Jardine's Naturalist's Library: Ornithology, published in Edinburgh in 1843. Edward Lear, best known today for his whimsical nonsense verse, was also an accomplished ornithological illustrator. His detailed and accurate drawings captured the beauty and intricacy of various bird species, including the Passenger Pigeon. The Passenger Pigeon, also known as Prideaux's Pigeon or the Wild Pigeon of North America, was once the most abundant bird species in the world. The last known Passenger Pigeon, a female named Martha, died in the Cincinnati Zoo in 1914.
