EDITORS COMMENTS
Paris, France - La Samaritaine (1719): A Glimpse into Parisian History and Architecture This image transports us back to 18th century Paris, featuring the iconic La Samaritaine fountain located near the Pont Neuf bridge on the Seine River. The fountain, adorned with intricately designed bronze figures and statues, was built during the reign of King Henri IV in 1608. The central figure of Jesus Christ, giving water to a Samaritan woman on stilts, symbolizes the biblical story of charity and kindness. The fountain system, which included sluices, suction pumps, and mill wheels, was an engineering marvel of its time. The water from the Seine was channeled through the bridge's arches and distributed to the city's districts, including the Jardin des Tuileries, through a series of canals. The architect of this magnificent structure was Jean Lintlaer, who restored the fountain in 1712 and 1715. However, the passage of time took its toll, and the fountain was destroyed during the French Revolution in 1813. In the background, the Louvre Palace and its clock tower can be seen, adding to the grandeur of the scene. This photograph is a testament to Paris' rich history, architectural prowess, and the beauty of its monuments that continue to captivate visitors from around the world.
