EDITORS COMMENTS
Paris, France - Chapelle Russe (Russian Chapel, 1862): A Glimpse into the Rich History of Orthodox Christianity in Europe This stunning photograph, taken in 1862, captures the breathtaking beauty of the Chapelle Russe, or Russian Chapel, located within the grounds of the Cathedral of the Madeleine in Paris, France. The chapel, designed by the architects Joseph-Louis-Charles Goustin and Vassiliev, was built between 1847 and 1852, commissioned by Tsar Nicholas I of Russia as a token of gratitude to France for its support during the Crimean War. The chapel's architectural style is a unique blend of Byzantine and Muscovite influences, with intricately carved wooden interiors and ornate gold-leaf decorations. The central apse, adorned with crosses and icons, is dedicated to Saints Alexander Nevsky and Nicholas, while the side chapels feature depictions of the Evangelists and other saints. The chapel's history is intertwined with that of the Russian Orthodox Church and its relationship with the Western European world. In 1861, the chapel became the seat of the Russian Orthodox Exarchate in Western Europe, and was the site of many important ceremonies and gatherings for Russian Orthodox parishes in Europe. The chapel's significance extends beyond its historical and religious importance. It also holds cultural significance as a symbol of the rich artistic and architectural traditions of both Russia and Europe. The chapel's influence can be seen in the works of famous artists such as Pablo Picasso and Olga Khokhlova, who were inspired by its unique beauty. Jesus Christ, represented in the center of the apse, watches over the faithful as they enter this sacred space, a reminder of the enduring power of faith and tradition in a rapidly changing world.
