EDITORS COMMENTS
In this handcolored copperplate engraving from Robert von Spalart's "Historical Picture of the Costumes of the Principal People of Antiquity and of the Middle Ages," published in 1796, we find two iconic figures of ancient Greece depicted in exquisite detail. On the left stands Pallas Athena, the goddess of wisdom and war, clad in the essential elements of her divine attire. She wears an undergarment called a stola, which is a long, flowing tunic that reaches down to her ankles, and a cloak, or pallium, draped over her shoulders. The intricate pattern on the stola and the delicate folds of the pallium are beautifully rendered, highlighting the skill of the engraver. On the right, a Spartan girl is depicted in the traditional attire of her tribe. She wears an open overdress, revealing her stola beneath, and a long skirt that reaches the ground. The Spartan woman's practical yet elegant attire reflects the strong and independent spirit of the Spartan people, known for their military prowess and commitment to their community. This engraving offers a fascinating glimpse into the rich history and culture of ancient Greece, providing valuable insights into the clothing and fashion trends of the time. The intricate details and vibrant colors of the handcoloring further enhance the visual appeal of the image, making it a true masterpiece of historical art.
