EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-coloured engraving, titled "The American Kestrel or Falco Sparverius, and the Arctic and Snowy Owls, or Bubo Scandiacus and Strigae Nyctea Striata," is an exquisite example of 19th-century American ornithology. Created by the renowned naturalist and artist, Alexander Wilson, in 1824, this illustration showcases two iconic North American birds of prey: the American Kestrel (Falco Sparverius) and the Arctic Owl (Bubo Scandiacus), with the Snowy Owl (Strigae Nyctea Striata) making a cameo appearance. The American Kestrel, a small falcon, is depicted in mid-flight, its wings outstretched, and its sharp eyes focused intently on the ground below. Known as the 'merlin of the New World,' this diurnal bird of prey is a common sight in open country and forests throughout North America. In contrast, the Arctic Owl, a nocturnal predator, is shown perched on a snowy branch, its large, round eyes piercing the darkness. This owl, also known as the 'hawk of the north,' is well-adapted to the harsh Arctic climate, with thick feathers that provide excellent insulation. The Snowy Owl, another Arctic denizen, is shown in the background, standing on a snowy mound. This owl is easily mistaken for the Arctic Hare, a common prey item, due to its white plumage. This beautiful illustration, taken from Wilson's seminal work, "American Ornithology," is a testament to the natural history of North America during the 19th century. The intricate details and vibrant colors bring these birds to life, transporting us to a time when the wonders of the natural world were just being discovered and documented.
