1878 30th Impression Ostrich Process Stages Artists

EDITORS COMMENTS
This 1870s artists impression, dated 30th March 1878, offers a fascinating glimpse into the burgeoning world of ostrich farming in South Africa. The intricately detailed print, published in 'Illustrated London News' on 21st December 1878, illustrates six distinct stages of the ostrich farming process. In the foreground, a group of ostriches graze peacefully in their natural habitat, their long necks reaching towards the ground to pluck up food. This scene represents the initial stage of ostrich farming, where the birds are allowed to roam freely in their natural environment, allowing them to grow strong and healthy. Moving further along the process, the second stage shows ostriches being rounded up and herded into a corral. This was achieved by using trained dogs, known as 'ostrich hunters', who would chase the birds towards the corral. Once inside, the ostriches were secured with ropes or nets, ready for the next stage. The third stage depicts the ostriches being tethered to stakes in the ground. This allowed the farmers to access the birds easily for plucking and processing. The fourth stage shows the ostriches being plucked, with farmers carefully removing their feathers using a sharp knife. The fifth stage illustrates the ostrich eggs being collected and transported to market, while the final stage shows the finished product - a beautifully crafted ostrich feather fan. This historical print provides a unique insight into the early days of ostrich farming in South Africa, a time when the industry was still in its infancy and the demand for ostrich products was starting to grow both in Europe and America. The print serves as a reminder of the rich history and cultural significance of ostrich farming in South Africa, a legacy that continues to thrive to this day.
