EDITORS COMMENTS
Onias III: The Jewish High Priest of Ancient Jerusalem (2nd Century BC) This colored engraving depicts Onias III, a pivotal figure in Jewish history during the Hellenistic period. Born around 200 BC, Onias served as the High Priest of the Second Temple in Jerusalem, a position he assumed following the death of his father, Simon II. During Onias' tenure, the Jewish community in Jerusalem faced significant challenges. The Seleucid Empire, which ruled much of the ancient Near East, sought to impose Greek cultural influences on the Jews. Onias, however, remained steadfast in his commitment to Jewish traditions and resisted Hellenistic assimilation. Despite his resistance, Onias' reign was not without controversy. He is said to have fled Jerusalem after a power struggle with his brother Jason, who sought the high priesthood for himself. Onias eventually found refuge in Egypt, where he established a Jewish community in Leontopolis. This engraving, created in the 19th century, offers a glimpse into the appearance and dignity of Onias III. The image conveys the solemnity and authority of the high priest, adorned in the traditional garments of his office. The intricate details and vibrant colors bring the historical figure to life, offering modern viewers a connection to the rich history of Judaism and the ancient world. Onias III's story is a testament to the resilience and adaptability of the Jewish people in the face of external pressures. His legacy continues to inspire and inform Jewish identity and religious practice to this day.
