EDITORS COMMENTS
The Old Castle, Canonbury: A Glimpse into London's Rich History The Old Castle in Canonbury, London, stands proudly as a testament to the city's illustrious past. Originally built as the manor house of Canonbury between 1509 and 1532 by William Bolton of St Bartholomew's Priory, this historic edifice has undergone several transformations throughout the centuries. In the late 16th century, Sir John Spencer, Lord Mayor of the City of London, undertook a significant renovation project. One of the most notable additions was the construction of the castle's impressive tower, which can be seen in this photograph taken circa 1909. Throughout history, the Old Castle has been graced by the presence of many esteemed figures. Francis Bacon, the renowned philosopher and statesman, and Oliver Goldsmith, the celebrated poet and playwright, are among the notable residents who have called this castle home. Today, the Old Castle continues to hold historical significance. It now serves as a Masonic research centre, providing a sanctuary for those seeking to delve deeper into the mysteries of the past. As we gaze upon this image, we are transported back in time, imagining the lives of those who once walked these halls and the stories they have to tell.
