Monster Oedipus Riddle Sphinx Subsequently Successfully Thebes Myth

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts the legendary moment when Oedipus, the enigmatic king of Thebes, triumphantly solves the riddle posed by the Sphinx. In Greek mythology, the Sphinx, a monstrous creature with the body of a lion and the head of a woman, had been terrorizing the city of Thebes by posing a seemingly unsolvable riddle to its inhabitants. The riddle was: "What walks on four legs in the morning, two legs at noon, and three legs in the evening?" Oedipus, a brilliant and determined man, refused to let the Sphinx's riddle go unsolved. He pondered the question relentlessly, and after much thought, he realized that the answer was a human being. The riddle described the stages of a human life: as a baby, a person crawls on all fours; as an adult, they walk on two legs; and in old age, they use a cane for support, making it effectively a third leg. With the Sphinx's riddle solved, Oedipus gained the respect and admiration of the Theban people. But little did they know, their new king had a dark and tragic past. Oedipus was actually the man fated to kill his own father and marry his mother, Jocasta. This revelation would eventually lead to Oedipus' downfall and the end of his reign. Despite the tragic outcome of his story, Oedipus' triumph over the Sphinx remains a testament to his intelligence and determination. This historical print, from Mary Evans Picture Library, transports us back to ancient Greece and allows us to witness this pivotal moment in classical mythology.
