EDITORS COMMENTS
Egginton Hall Hospital: A Haven for Nursing Care During WWI in Derbyshire This evocative photograph captures a group of dedicated and compassionate women who served as nursing staff at Egginton Hall Hospital in Derbyshire during the First World War. Established by the philanthropic Mrs Arthur Dugdale at the outbreak of the conflict, Egginton Hall was an up-to-date Red Cross hospital that provided essential care and support to wounded soldiers. Mrs Dugdale placed great emphasis on training all Red Cross probationers in both practical and theoretical nursing, ensuring that the hospital offered the highest standard of care possible. The women in this photograph, taken in 1917, represent a small but significant portion of the dedicated nursing staff who worked tirelessly to heal and comfort the soldiers who passed through its doors. In the back row, we see the faces of several experienced nurses from esteemed institutions such as St. Thomass Hospital (represented by Miss R. Baxter), Derbyshire Royal Infirmary (Miss M. Hudson), and Guy's Hospital (Miss B.M. Waterman). Mrs. Dugdale, the hospital's founder, stands proudly amongst her team, surrounded by her colleagues, including Miss McGregor, Miss McCalder, Miss P. Porter, Miss G. Carter, Mrs. Sherston, Miss M. Handcock, and two unidentified nurses, Miss E. Smith and Mrs. G. Winterbottom. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the crucial role that women played in the medical response to the First World War and the sacrifices they made to care for the wounded soldiers. The nursing staff at Egginton Hall Hospital, like those depicted in this image, played an indispensable part in the war effort and left a lasting impact on the lives of countless soldiers and their families.
