Joan of Arc, a peasant girl from Domrémy, rose to prominence during the Hundred Years' War when she claimed divine guidance from saints and angels. She led the French army to several important victories, including the relief of Orléans, which ultimately led to the coronation of Charles VII. After her military successes, Joan was captured by the Burgundians and sold to the English, who put her on trial for heresy and other charges. Despite her young age and lack of formal education, she defended herself brilliantly, refusing to recant her beliefs. She was ultimately condemned and burned at the stake in 1431. The monument in Rouen, erected in her honor, was unveiled in 1879. The statue of Joan of Arc atop the monument depicts her in full armor, holding the standard of France and a sword in her right hand, symbolizing her military prowess and unwavering dedication to her country.
