EDITORS COMMENTS
United States Warships Bombard San Juan: The Prelude to Ground Forces Advancement (June 1898) This evocative image captures the momentous event of the United States Navy's bombardment of San Juan, Puerto Rico, on June 24, 1898. The Spanish-American War was in full swing, and the U.S. military was determined to secure control of the strategic Caribbean island. The photograph features a fleet of American warships, anchored off the coast of San Juan, preparing to unleash their formidable firepower. Among the vessels visible are the USS Baltimore, USS New York, and USS Texas, all heavily armed and ready for battle. In the foreground, the USS Theodore Roosevelt, named after the future President, can be seen steaming towards the shore. The bombardment marked the beginning of a decisive phase in the war. The Spanish garrison, outnumbered and outgunned, was unable to withstand the relentless barrage. The following day, U.S. ground forces, led by General Nelson A. Miles, landed at Guánica and began their advance towards San Juan. The bombardment of San Juan was a turning point in the Spanish-American War. It paved the way for the eventual U.S. victory and the acquisition of Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines as territories. This photograph is a testament to the military might and determination of the United States during this period, and a reminder of the pivotal role played by the U.S. Navy in shaping American history.
