EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage lantern slide depicts a Mills hand grenade, a crucial weapon used by British troops during World War I. The Mills hand grenade, designed by William Mills, was first issued to the British Army in 1915 and became a standard-issue weapon for infantry soldiers. The grenade was designed to be thrown by hand and was effective against both enemy soldiers and fortified positions. The grenade in this photograph is shown in its original packaging, which includes a safety pin and a ring pull to remove the pin. The grenade itself is shaped like a cylinder with a distinctive fin design, which helped it to roll unpredictably upon being thrown, making it more difficult for the enemy to predict its trajectory. The grenade's explosive charge was initiated by a percussion cap that was struck by a hammer when the safety pin was removed. The use of hand grenades in trench warfare during World War I was a significant development in military tactics. Soldiers could use them to attack enemy positions from a distance, bypassing the deadly stalemate of trench warfare. The Mills hand grenade became a symbol of the brutal and often close-quarter combat that characterized the Western Front during this period. This photograph is part of The Keasbury-Gordon Photograph Archive Collection from Mary Evans Prints Online, an extensive collection of historical images that provides valuable insights into the people, events, and social history of the past. This image offers a unique glimpse into the weapons and tactics used by British soldiers during World War I, and serves as a reminder of the sacrifices and hardships endured by those who fought in this global conflict.
