Volta Tower, Finedon: A Glimpse into the Past This photograph, taken circa 1910 by Thomas E. Pope, offers a glimpse into the history of Volta Tower in Finedon, Northamptonshire. The folly, built in 1865, once stood proudly as a testament to the grandeur and whimsy of the Victorian era. Located in the picturesque village of Finedon, the Volta Tower was a popular attraction for locals and visitors alike. Its unique design, inspired by the ancient Roman Tower of the Winds in Athens, Greece, made it a distinctive landmark in the area. The tower's name was derived from the Latin word for 'turning,' a reference to the rotating vane that once adorned its summit, designed to indicate wind direction. Despite its impressive appearance, the Volta Tower was not built for practical purposes. Instead, it served as a folly, a decorative structure with no practical function, built primarily for aesthetic pleasure. The tower's construction was a labor of love by its creator, Sir Charles Isham, 13th Baronet, who was known for his passion for architecture and gardening. Unfortunately, the Volta Tower did not stand the test of time. It collapsed in 1951, leaving only memories and photographs like this one to remind us of its former glory. Today, the site is a quiet reminder of the past, a place where history and nature come together to tell the story of a bygone era.
