Isis, the Ancient Egyptian Goddess: A Sculptural Portrait of Aset, the Mother of Horus This sculptural portrait depicts the revered Ancient Egyptian Goddess Isis, also known as Aset, who was widely worshipped throughout the Greco-Roman world. Isis is shown here with her arms folded, adorned only with decorative wings below, symbolizing her immense power and mourning. The wings, a common attribute of Isis, were often depicted in their full grandeur, covering her entire back, representing her role as the protective mother goddess and the goddess of magic and healing. The date of this sculpture is estimated to be circa 1916. The intricate details and the subtle coloration suggest that this sculpture was crafted with great care and attention to authenticity. The goddess' serene expression and the delicate folds of her garment further accentuate her divine beauty and grace. Isis, one of the most beloved and enduring deities in Ancient Egyptian mythology, was the wife and sister of Osiris, the god of the underworld, and the mother of Horus, the god of the sky. Her worship spread far and wide, reaching the Greco-Roman world, where she was revered as the goddess of motherhood, fertility, and magic. This stunning sculpture was featured in the January 1917 issue of a magazine, Volume X, published by Frances Taplin Darlington, in an article dedicated to the study and appreciation of ancient art. The image serves as a testament to the enduring allure and influence of Ancient Egyptian culture and mythology, even a century ago.
