EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage lantern slide depicts the historic scene of the salvaging process of the German battleship Baden at Scapa Flow during the aftermath of World War I. Scapa Flow, located in the Orkney Islands of Scotland, served as a major naval base for the British Royal Navy and was the site of internment for the German High Seas Fleet following the armistice in 1918. In this photograph, the Battleship Baden, a proud symbol of the German Imperial Navy, lies damaged and sinking in the waters of Scapa Flow. The British Navy, determined to prevent the potential use of the German fleet as a weapon, had begun the process of scuttling the ships by removing their propellers and other essential parts. However, the crew of the Baden, refusing to surrender their vessel, began the self-sinking process prematurely, causing the ship to list and eventually sink. The salvaging efforts seen in this photograph took place after the sinking, with British sailors and engineers working tirelessly to raise the battleship and restore it to seaworthiness. The Victorian and Edwardian-era clothing and equipment of the workers add to the nostalgic and historical feel of the image. The salvaging of the Baden was a significant achievement, as it was the largest ship ever raised from the seabed at the time and marked the end of an era in naval history. This lantern slide, part of The Keasbury-Gordon Photograph Archive Collection from Mary Evans Prints Online, offers a unique glimpse into the past, providing a fascinating insight into the events that shaped the world during the early 20th century.
