EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving depicts an Onager, an imperial Roman torsion-powered siege engine, from the Museo Militar's collection, dated back to 1883. The Onager, a type of catapult, was a significant advancement in ancient Roman engineering and military technology during the late Roman Republic and Roman Empire eras. During times of war, the Onager was used to hurl large stones or projectiles over long distances, enabling the Romans to besiege and conquer fortified cities and towns. The machine's name originated from the animal of the same name due to its resemblance to the animal's head and the way it 'threw' its projectiles. The Onager was a complex mechanism, consisting of a torsion-powered arm that was wound up using ropes and counterweights. Once the arm was fully loaded, the tension was released, causing the arm to swing forward and launch the projectile towards the target. The Onager was relatively small compared to other siege engines of the time, making it a versatile and portable weapon. This engraving, which has been colorated in more recent times, provides a fascinating glimpse into the technological innovations of the ancient Roman world. The Onager, along with other Roman siege engines, revolutionized warfare during the Roman Empire and left a lasting impact on military history.
