RMS Warwick Castle of the Union Castle Line
RMS Warwick Castle of the Union Castle Line in service between Britain and South Africa during the mid 20th century. Built as Pretoria Castle in 1938 by Harland & Wolff at Belfast, she was the sister ship of the Durban Castle and commenced her maiden voyage on the 20th April 1939. Re-purchased after WW2 (where she was re-purposed for use as an Armed Merchant Cruiser) by Union-Castle in January 1946 and rebuilt to her original specification but, because a new mail ship was under construction with Pretoria Castle as her designated name, she was renamed Warwick Castle. Date: circa 1950

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures the majestic RMS Warwick Castle of the Union Castle Line, a true icon of ocean liner travel during the mid-20th century. Originally built as the Pretoria Castle in 1938 by Harland & Wolff in Belfast, she was a sister ship to the Durban Castle and began her maiden voyage on April 20, 1939.
During World War II, the RMS Warwick Castle served as an Armed Merchant Cruiser before being re-purchased by Union-Castle in January 1946. She was then rebuilt to her original specifications but renamed Warwick Castle due to a new mail ship under construction with Pretoria Castle as its designated name.
Operating on the route between Britain and South Africa, this steamship was a vital link for passengers traveling between these two continents. The image captures her sleek lines and grandeur as she sailed through the open seas during the 1950s.
The RMS Warwick Castle represents an era of elegance and luxury in ocean travel, where passengers could experience unparalleled comfort and service while crossing vast distances. This print is not just a visual reminder of a bygone time but also a testament to human ingenuity and craftsmanship in creating such magnificent vessels for exploration and adventure on the high seas.
