EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph showcases an 18-carat gold signet ring recovered from the body of a Titanic victim by the cable ship Mackay-Bennett. The ring, dating back to 1911, features a star-gypsy setting with a small old-cut diamond solitaire measuring approximately 3/32 inches in diameter and 1/16 inches deep, estimated to weigh around 0.07 carats. The band bears hallmarks for Birmingham 1911, a sponsor's mark W.D in a double lobe for William Davies, and a stock number 7799. The ring is slightly tapering, with a thickness of 1/32 inches and a rose-gold tint. The shank is inset with a piece of slightly more yellow gold at the back to make the ring larger, which is approximately 5/16 inches long overall. There is also evidence of original crude engraving inside the shank, though this is now indecipherable. This poignant relic transports us back to the 1910s, reminding us of the tragic voyage of the RMS Titanic and the lives lost at sea.
