EDITORS COMMENTS
This extraordinary photograph showcases an extremely rare brass porthole salvaged from the wreck of the RMS Lusitania in 1982. The porthole, which measures 13 inches in diameter, bears several labels, making it a valuable artifact with a rich history. The most prominent label reads "Porthole No. 3, Mail Room 2/10/82." Another label states, "This porthole was the first item to be raised from Lusitania during 1982 dive." The RMS Lusitania was a British ocean liner that was sunk by a German U-boat during World War I on May 7, 1915, off the coast of Ireland. The sinking of the Lusitania resulted in the loss of over 1,100 lives, making it one of the most infamous maritime disasters in history. This porthole, now a prized possession, was recovered during an exploration of the wreck site in 1982 by divers from Oceaneering. It was later sold with a certificate of authenticity from Cobwebs, along with photocopies of the dive records. The round, metal porthole, with its intricate design and historical significance, is a testament to the rich maritime history of the RMS Lusitania.
