EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithographic portrait depicts Queen Urraca of Castile, Leon, and Galicia, also known as Urraca the Reckless, who ruled from 1109 to 1126. Born in the 11th century, Urraca was the eldest daughter of King Alfonso VI of León and Castile. Her reign began at the age of 28, following the death of her father, and lasted until her own demise at the hands of her half-brother, Alfonso VII. Urraca's nickname, 'the Reckless,' was a reflection of her bold and unconventional rule. She defied the traditional gender roles of the time and asserted her authority over her kingdom, leading her armies into battle and even engaging in diplomacy with neighboring Muslim rulers. Her reign was marked by military campaigns, political intrigue, and alliances, making her a significant figure in the history of the Iberian Peninsula during the Middle Ages. This portrait, created by the Spanish artist Llanta in 1866, is an illustration from the "Cronica General de Espana," a historical work that aimed to provide a comprehensive and illustrated account of the history and provinces of Spain. The image captures the regal presence of Urraca, with her crown adorned with precious stones and her royal robes embroidered with intricate designs. Her intense gaze and strong posture convey a sense of determination and leadership, making this portrait a fitting tribute to a remarkable queen who defied the conventions of her time.
