Cool or Nervous? The Prince of Wales - During the Ordeal of the Investiture
EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative series of eight reportage photographs captures the intense atmosphere of the investiture of the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VIII, at Carnarvon Castle in Wales in 1911. The investiture, an ancient ceremony marking the formal investiture of a new monarch with the insignia of office, was a significant event in the Edwardian era of the early 20th century. The first photograph shows the Prince of Wales, dressed in the traditional red and gold robes of the Order of the Garter, standing resolute and composed before the ceremony. But as the series unfolds, the tension and anticipation of the moment become palpable. In one image, the Prince's eyes are fixed intently on the crowd, while in another, he appears deep in thought, his brow furrowed with concentration. The scenes captured in these photographs offer a rare glimpse into the emotional and physical demands of the investiture ceremony. In one image, the Prince is seen being led through the castle's ancient halls by officials, his expression a mixture of determination and apprehension. In another, he is shown kneeling before the throne, his hands trembling slightly as he receives the insignia of the Order of the Garter from the Archbishop of Canterbury. Despite the nervous energy and intensity of the moment, the Prince of Wales maintains his composure throughout the ceremony, a testament to his strength and determination. These powerful images offer a unique insight into the historical event and the emotional journey of the future king.
