EDITORS COMMENTS
The Hero-Cleaning season: General Gordon's statue in Trafalgar Square recently underwent cleansing operations, and our photograph captures the famous soldier as unperturbed as ever at the assaults of the British workmen. Major-General Charles George Gordon, CB (1833-1885), known as Chinese Gordon, Gordon Pasha, and Gordon of Khartoum, stands tall and resolute in the bronze sculpture. A British Army officer and administrator, Gordon gained renown for his military campaigns in China and Sudan, as well as his humanitarian efforts in Khartoum. Dressed in his military uniform, complete with a bearskin hat, the statue embodies the courage and determination that defined Gordon's life. The 1910 photograph, taken during the Hero-Cleaning season when many London landmarks were being restored, showcases the enduring legacy of this remarkable figure in British history.
