EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken by the renowned Swiss photographer Pierre Joseph Rossier, depicts Mandarins engaged in a leisurely game in China during the late 19th century. The scene, which is believed to have been captured between 1858 and 1861, offers a rare glimpse into the daily life of the Chinese elite during this period. The Mandarins, dressed in their traditional robes and hats, sit in a tranquil setting, their expressions focused as they move their pieces on the game board. The game being played is somewhat similar to Draughts, a strategy board game with a rich history that can be traced back over 5,000 years. However, the version depicted here may differ from the Western variant, as the Chinese version of the game, known as Go or Weiqi, has distinct rules and strategies. Rossier's photographs were among the first commercial views of China to be sold in the West. They were issued by Negretti and Zambra, a prominent London-based scientific instrument and photographic equipment supplier. These important images provided Europeans with a new perspective on Chinese culture, piquing their interest and fueling the growing fascination with the Eastern world. The photograph's intricate details and authenticity make it a valuable addition to any collection focused on Chinese history, culture, or photography. The Mandarins' intense concentration, the game board, and the serene setting all combine to create a captivating and evocative image that transports us back in time to a fascinating era.
