EDITORS COMMENTS
Mahmud I (1696-1754), also known as "The Hunchback," was the Ottoman Sultan who ruled from 1730 to 1754. This engraving, created by Lemaitre, Lalaisse, and Pannier for the historical work "Historia de Turquia" by Joseph Marie Jouannin and Jules Van Gaver, offers a striking depiction of Mahmud I in his regal attire. Born as Osman III, Mahmud I ascended to the throne at the young age of 16, following the assassination of his father, Ahmed III. Known for his hunchback, Mahmud I was a capable ruler who strengthened the Ottoman Empire's military and diplomatic standing during his reign. In this portrait, Mahmud I is shown wearing a traditional Ottoman outfit, complete with a long, flowing robe, a feather headdress, and a turban adorned with precious stones. His beard is full and well-groomed, a sign of his royal status. A bearer holds a large, ornate fan, ready to shield the Sultan from the heat or unwanted attention. The Ottoman Empire during Mahmud I's reign was a time of cultural and artistic flourishing. The Sultan himself was a patron of the arts, supporting the construction of mosques, madrasas, and other architectural marvels. This engraving is a testament to the grandeur and opulence of the Ottoman Court during the 18th century. Mahmud I's reign came to an end in 1754, when he was succeeded by his son, Osman III. Despite his physical deformity, Mahmud I proved to be a strong and effective ruler, leaving a lasting impact on the Ottoman Empire and its people.
