EDITORS COMMENTS
The print captures the dramatic scene of the James Stevens lifeboat setting out into a choppy sea in St Ives, Cornwall. Built in 1899 by Thames Ironworks, this impressive vessel was too long to navigate through the narrow streets of St Ives and had to be delivered by sea from Hayle. Despite this logistical challenge, the James Stevens No.10 went on to have a successful career over its 33 years in service. With a total of 59 launches and an incredible 227 human lives (and even 5 dogs) saved, this lifeboat played a crucial role in ensuring the safety of those at sea during its time. The brave crewmen aboard faced rough waters and challenging conditions as they ventured out into the surf to rescue those in need. This image from circa 1904 showcases not only the bravery and dedication of the crew but also highlights the power and beauty of nature as waves crash around them. It serves as a reminder of the importance of rescue services like the RNLI in keeping our coastal communities safe.
