This engraving depicts a Knight of the Order of Santiago, one of the most ancient and prestigious chivalric orders in Europe, founded in the 12th century on the Iberian Peninsula. The Order of Santiago, also known as the Order of St. James of the Sword, was established to protect pilgrims traveling to the sacred site of Santiago de Compostela, the supposed burial place of the apostle Saint James. The knight in this image is shown wearing the distinctive garb of the Order, including a white mantle with the red cross of St. James, a helmet adorned with the same cross, and a cloak draped over his shoulders.
