EDITORS COMMENTS
Title: 'Lunch' - A Timeless Moment of Rest for Two Workhorse Companions, Circa 1901 In this illustration, we find ourselves transported back in time to the early 20th century as we observe a pair of horses, one black and one white, taking a well-deserved break from their labor. The horses, both with weary expressions, are seen feeding from large sacks, their heads close together as if sharing a quiet moment of companionship. The black horse, with a gentle nudge, readies itself to pull a simple two-wheeled cart, a testament to their continued duty. This evocative image, titled 'Lunch,' is an exquisite creation from the esteemed illustrator, Théophile Alexandre Steinlen (1859-1923). Steinlen, a renowned French artist, was a prominent figure in the art world during the Belle Époque era. Known for his vivid and detailed works, he was a master of caricature and contributed significantly to the popular 'Album des Six' and 'Gil Blas' publications. This illustration, part of the Mary Evans Prints Online collection, is believed to have been published in the 'Les Maitres de la Caricature' issue 11, April 1901. Despite its age, the illustration maintains a striking level of detail and charm, inviting us to appreciate the simple beauty of a moment in time when these hardworking horses found solace in each other's company during their lunch break.
