1. Title: HMS Eagle 94 - A Forgotten Chapter in Maritime Aviation History Caption: This evocative black-and-white photograph captures the majestic sight of HMS Eagle 94, an aircraft carrier that time forgot. This historic vessel, a converted Almirante Latorre-class battleship named Almirante Cochrane when under Chilean ownership, is seen here in its new role as a Royal Navy aviation asset. Originally ordered by Chile in 1929, the Almirante Cochrane was intended to be the South American nation's most advanced warship. However, political instability and financial difficulties in Chile led to the ship's seizure by the British government in 1931. The Royal Navy saw an opportunity to convert the battleship into an aircraft carrier, and HMS Eagle 94 was born. The conversion process was a significant undertaking, involving the removal of the battleship's main armament and the installation of a 512-foot-long flight deck, hangar facilities, and a complement of 24 aircraft. The transformation was completed in 1934, making HMS Eagle 94 the Royal Navy's first purpose-built aircraft carrier. HMS Eagle 94 served with distinction during World War II, participating in several key operations, including the invasion of Madagascar and the Battle of the Atlantic. The carrier's aircraft provided vital reconnaissance, anti-submarine, and strike capabilities, making it an invaluable asset to the Royal Navy. Despite its wartime successes, HMS Eagle 94 was eventually decommissioned in 1946 and sold for scrap in 1948. This photograph, taken during the carrier's active service years, offers a glimpse into a fascinating chapter in maritime aviation history – a time when a repurposed battleship became a pioneering aircraft carrier for the Royal Navy. This photograph is part of The Peter Butt Aviation Collection, available exclusively through Mary Evans Picture Library.
