This vintage lantern slide depicts the final moments of the German battleship Bayern as it sinks in Scapa Flow, Orkney Islands, on the morning of June 21, 1919. The Bayern, a former flagship of the German High Seas Fleet, was one of four battleships scuttled during Operation Carlsbad, a deliberate sinking ordered by the German Navy to prevent the ships from falling into the hands of the Allied forces following Germany's defeat in World War I. The image captures the chaos and destruction of the sinking battleship, with plumes of smoke rising from the water and the ship's mast and funnel jutting out of the water. Surrounding the Bayern are other vessels, including a cruiser, which attempt to assist in the rescue efforts.
