Enoch Powell, controversial British politician

(John) Enoch Powell (1912-1998), British politician and Conservative MP from 1950 to 1974. After controversy over his Rivers of Blood speech in 1968, he was sacked from his position in the shadow cabinet, and in 1974 he was elected as Ulster Unionist MP for the Northern Irish constituency of South Down (he was eventually defeated in the 1987 General Election). Before going into politics he was a classical scholar and Professor of Ancient Greek, and served in the Second World War. Date: circa 1960s.
