EDITORS COMMENTS
This fragment of a 14th century copy of Der Sachsenspiegel, also known as Sassen Speyghel, showcases a significant moment in the history of German law. Der Sachsenspiegel, meaning "The Mirror of the Saxons," is a compendium of German law written in Middle Low German instead of the traditional Latin. The text on this leaf is taken from Book II of the Lantrechtes, or Common Law. The main body text is written in a Gothic bookhand in black ink in two columns. The text is adorned with red paragraph marks that extend to underlining, as well as red rubrics and large 2-line capitals alternating red and blue. These features were used to aid in the reading and understanding of the text, which would have been important given the complexity of the legal material. The Sachsenspiegel was written around 1220, making this fragment over 200 years old by the 14th century. The preservation of this medieval manuscript is a testament to the importance of the text and the care taken to ensure its survival. The intricately designed rubrics and capitals, as well as the use of red ink, add visual interest to the text and demonstrate the artistry and craftsmanship of the scribe. The fragment's age and historical significance make it a valuable addition to any collection of medieval manuscripts or legal texts.
