EDITORS COMMENTS
This magnificent carved oak sculpture depicts a rampant lion, proudly holding a globe aloft with one paw, while standing atop a coiled rope with the other. The intricately detailed lion, created by the skilled hands of artist Gerry Holzman, is a testament to the grandeur and elegance of the Cunard Line. The lion's regal posture and the globe symbolize the Line's rich maritime history and its role in the transportation industry. The octagonal base of the sculpture is adorned with eight plaques, each commemorating significant milestones in Cunard's storied past. These include the founding year of the company by Samuel Cunard in 1787, as well as the maiden voyages of several iconic Cunard vessels: Britannia (1840), Persia (1856), Bothnia (1874), Mauretania (1907), Queen Mary (1936), and Queen Elizabeth (1940 and 1969). Originally believed to have been purchased as a retirement present in 1969 for the Managing Director of Cunard America, this impressive piece weighs 7kg and measures 20 inches in height. The sculpture is a stunning representation of the heraldic animal, which has long been associated with the Cunard Line and its legacy in the transportation industry. The intricate carving and attention to detail make this a truly unique and valuable piece of maritime history.
