This photograph, taken in the vibrant city of Cork, Ireland during the 1910s, showcases the unique and entirely peculiar mode of transportation known as the 'Jingle' or 'Covered Car'. Unlike any other horse-drawn vehicle, this two-wheeled wonder features a flat-topped, square, tent-like covering made of black tarpaulin. The angled, slanting sides are adorned with movable curtains, providing both shelter from the elements and a sense of privacy for its passengers. The Jingle Car, also referred to as a 'gingle' or 'gingleman's carriage', was a common sight on the streets of Cork during this era. Its distinctive sound, created by the jingling harnesses of the horses, gave it its name. The vehicle's open rear allowed for easy loading and unloading of goods, making it an ideal choice for both personal and commercial use. The Jingle Car's driver, known as a 'jingleman', sat at an angle on the vehicle, steering with a long shaft and reins, while passengers sat comfortably under the protective cover.
