EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the progress of the construction of the Queensway Mersey Tunnel, a groundbreaking engineering project that connected Liverpool and Birkenhead through a road tunnel under the River Mersey. The tunnel's construction began in 1925, under the visionary leadership of consulting engineer Sir Basil Mott and Liverpool's City Engineer, John Brodie. With a workforce of 1700 men, this monumental endeavor was a testament to the ingenuity and determination of the 1920s and 1930s. The image showcases the intricate process of excavating the tunnel, with workers toiling away in the dimly lit tunnel, drilling and blasting the rock to make way for the roadway. The use of steam-powered machinery and the careful placement of timbering to support the tunnel walls are evident, reflecting the technological advancements and engineering expertise of the era. Despite the challenges and risks involved, the construction of the Queensway Mersey Tunnel was completed in 1934, revolutionizing travel and transportation between Liverpool and Birkenhead. Regrettably, 17 lives were lost during the construction process, a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made to bring this engineering marvel to fruition. This photograph stands as a testament to the human spirit and the remarkable achievements of civil engineering during the 1920s and 1930s.
