EDITORS COMMENTS
This breathtaking panorama, taken from the South Gate of Canton, China, captures the vibrant and bustling scene of the Eastern Oriental city in the late 19th century. The image, created by the renowned Swiss photographer Pierre Joseph Rossier, is a testament to the rich cultural and commercial exchange that was taking place between the East and the West during this period. The South Gate, also known as the Haicang Gate, is one of the oldest and most historic gates in the city of Canton. It was built in 1631 and served as the main entrance to the city for traders and travelers from the south. The gate is flanked by two impressive watchtowers, which can be seen in the foreground of the image. Beyond the gate, the scene unfolds with a stunning panorama of the city. The bustling markets and streets are filled with people, carts, and boats, all moving about their daily business. The harbor, with its numerous ships and boats, is a hub of commercial activity, as Canton was one of the most important trading ports in China during this time. This panorama, taken between 1858 and 1861, is part of the first series of views of China to be published and sold in the Western world by Negretti and Zambra. These important images provided the first glimpses of China for many people in the West, and helped to fuel the growing interest in and fascination with the Orient. The intricate details and rich colors of this photograph, taken over 150 years ago, transport us back in time and offer a unique glimpse into the history and culture of Canton during the height of the Chinese trade era.
