EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the Bristol 171 Sycamore HR.14 XJ385 (msn 13392) on gate-guard duty at RAF Tern Hill in April 1976. The Sycamore, a versatile and iconic British helicopter, was originally manufactured by the Bristol Aeroplane Company in 171 series between 1957 and 1960. This particular aircraft, with the serial number XJ385, was delivered to the Royal Air Force on October 5, 1956, and saw its last flight on October 25, 1963, following an engine fire. After undergoing repairs, the helicopter was repurposed for static display and gate guard duties at various Royal Air Force bases. In this image, the Sycamore HR.14 proudly stands at RAF Tern Hill, its distinctive silhouette contrasting against the blue sky. The helicopter's intricate details, from its rotor blades to its tail fin, are on full display, making for an awe-inspiring sight. This photograph is a testament to the enduring legacy of the Bristol Sycamore and its service in the Royal Air Force.
