EDITORS COMMENTS
Sir John French: Commander-in-Chief of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) during the First World War This evocative photograph captures the stern and resolute visage of Sir John French (1852-1925), one of the most prominent figures in the early years of the First World War. Born on January 1, 1852, in Dublin, Ireland, French joined the British Army in 1871 and rose through the ranks to become a major-general in 1902. In August 1914, as the clouds of war gathered over Europe, French was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF), a position he held until December 1915. With the outbreak of war, French led the BEF to France to support the French and Belgian armies against the invading German forces. French's tenure as Commander-in-Chief was marked by a series of military setbacks, most notably the Battle of the Marne in September 1914, where the Allied forces were able to halt the German advance on Paris. Despite these successes, French was criticized for his handling of the retreat from Mons and the subsequent First Battle of Ypres. In December 1915, French was relieved of his command and replaced by General Douglas Haig. He continued to serve in various military roles until his retirement in 1916. French's legacy as Commander-in-Chief of the BEF remains a subject of debate among historians, with some viewing him as a capable and effective leader, while others criticizing his strategic decisions. This photograph, taken during French's time as Commander-in-Chief, captures the intensity and determination of a man who played a pivotal role in the early years of the First World War. With his piercing gaze and military bearing, French cuts an imposing figure, a testament to the weight of responsibility he bore during this critical period in world history.
