Born in 1852, Alice was the eldest daughter of Dean Henry Liddell and Priscilla Hutton Liddell. Her father, a distinguished academic, was the Dean of Christ Church College at the University of Oxford, and her mother was a talented artist. Alice's childhood was filled with the magic and wonder of Oxford's dreamlike landscape, which undoubtedly inspired the fantastical world of Carroll's creation. The author, Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, better known by his pseudonym Lewis Carroll, became a close friend of the family and often entertained the Liddell children with his whimsical stories and riddles.
