EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph from the late 19th century, we find Empress Haruko, also known as Shoken, the consort of Emperor Meiji Mutsuhito of Japan. The image, taken around 1885, captures the regal beauty and grace of the Empress, who was a significant figure in Japanese history. Born in 1849, Haruko was the eldest daughter of the daimyo (feudal lord) of the Hizen Province, Mori Takachika. She was selected as a consort for Emperor Meiji in 1865, and later became the Empress in 1867 following the death of Emperor Komei. Haruko was a strong and influential figure during the Meiji Restoration, a period of significant political and social change in Japan. The photograph showcases Haruko in her formal attire, adorned with intricate jewelry and a magnificent headdress. Her serene expression and poised posture exude an air of dignity and elegance, reflecting her status as the Empress of Japan. The muted colors and soft lighting of the image add to the overall sense of tranquility and refinement. As the wife of Emperor Meiji, Haruko played a crucial role in the court and in the education of the imperial heir, Crown Prince Yoshihito. She was also known for her patronage of the arts and her support of various charitable causes. Haruko continued to wield significant influence even after the death of Emperor Meiji in 1912, serving as the Dowager Empress until her own death in 1914. This photograph offers a glimpse into the life of an influential and powerful figure in Japanese history, providing a window into the opulence and grandeur of the imperial court during the late 19th century.
