EDITORS COMMENTS
The Battle of Montereau, fought on 18 February 1814, was a significant engagement during the final campaigns of the Napoleonic Wars in Europe. This print depicts a pivotal moment in the battle, as French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte personally leads his troops in repelling an attack on his rearguard by the Austrian and Russian forces under the command of Prinz Eugen of Wurttemberg. The French army, weary from months of relentless campaigning, was retreating towards Paris after suffering a series of defeats. Napoleon, determined to hold off the pursuing enemy forces and buy time for his troops to regroup, made a stand at Montereau. The Austrian and Russian forces, sensing an opportunity to deliver a decisive blow, launched a fierce attack on the French rearguard. Despite being outnumbered and facing the prospect of being surrounded, Napoleon rallied his troops and launched a counterattack. The French cavalry, led by the Emperor himself, charged into the enemy lines, causing chaos and confusion. The Austrian and Russian forces were repulsed, and the French army was able to continue its retreat towards Paris. This print captures the intensity and drama of the moment as Napoleon and his troops repel the attack by Prinz Eugen's forces. The smoke-filled battlefield, the clashing of swords, and the determined expressions on the faces of the soldiers all serve to convey the raw power and emotion of the battle. The print is a testament to the indomitable spirit of the French army and their leader, who refused to surrender despite the odds being stacked against them.
