EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the Somerset County Cricket Team of 1905, featuring some of the most prominent cricketers of the era. At the helm as captain is Samuel Moses James Woods (1867-1931), an Australian-born sportsman who represented both Australia and England at Test cricket. Woods was not only a skilled cricketer but also excelled in rugby union, appearing thirteen times for England and five times as captain. Furthermore, he played at county level in England for soccer and hockey. Seated to Woods' left is Lionel Charles Hamilton Palairet (1870-1933), an English amateur cricketer who graced the pitch for Somerset and Oxford University. Palairet was a graceful right-handed batsman who was selected to play Test cricket for England on two occasions in 1902. In the top row, fourth from the left, is Leonard Charles Braund (1875-1955), who represented Surrey, Somerset, and England. The team's striped blazers add a touch of elegance to the image, capturing the essence of the cricket season in the early 1900s.
